Rapid Manchester Half Sell Out Despite 50% Growth

The Manchester Half, the largest half marathon in the North-West, returns on Sunday 13th October 2024 with a record-size field. The 24,000 available places were snapped up over four months in advance, even though capacity increased this year by 50%, now making this one of the largest in the UK.

The Manchester Half also sold out in 2023 when over 16,000 took on the challenge.

The 13.1-mile challenge will take over Greater Manchester, bringing a feelgood atmosphere on and off the course with plenty of live music and activities planned for all to enjoy. The event also contributes a significant economic boost for the region, as challengers come from far and wide to take part.

This year’s bumper field of participants boasts an almost equal gender split, with 49.4% identifying as female when registering. The event has also drawn in an impressive 16,000 participants from outside of Manchester, which will contribute to a significant boost to the local economy through hospitality and retail (last year saw an uplift of £3.8 million to the host economy). What’s more, all participants are expected to raise over £1,000,000 across various charities and good causes. Organisers will also boost this by donating £1 from every entry to local initiatives through the Trafford Active Fund, helping to build a long-lasting sport and physical activity legacy in Greater Manchester.

Whilst most will be taking part to reach their own goals, there is likely to be another enjoyable tussle at the front to claim first place. Last time Lauren McNeil (1:10:02) and Jack Rowe (1:02:40) were crowned winners, both in new course record times. Matthew Clarke (58:59) was champion in the wheelchair category, with hopes of another classic competition this October.

Those who are not able to join the tens of thousands supporting on the streets will be able to watch a live stream of the action through YouTube and the official Manchester Half website.

Chief Executive of Manchester Half event organiser Human Race Andrew Smith said: “It will be another record-breaking turnout at the Manchester Half this October. That’s testament to the reputation it has garnered, and the huge desire people have to run through this magnificent city. We’re incredibly proud of the event and the sense of community it fosters. It’s not just about the event itself; it’s about bringing people together, promoting health and wellbeing, and supporting charitable causes”.
