2017 SuperTri Children’s, Youth & Junior Open Water Triathlon Race Report

5th July 2017

It was an action-packed day on Saturday 1st July at Dorney Lake as youngsters of all ages took part in the SuperTri Children’s, Youth & Junior Open Water Triathlon.

The morning kicked off with the fun and friendly Scootathlon, offering children aged four to eight the opportunity for an introduction to multi-sport racing. Scoot, bike, run was on the cards for our budding athletes, with much cheering and support from nearby mums and dads.

At 9:15 the first triathlon race took to the water, with the British Triathlon Senior Elite & Junior Super Series 17-19 year old men pushing themselves to some fantastic performances. Topping the podium were Richard Horton (Team Triumph), Richard Allen (Leeds Triathlon Centre) and Barclay Izzard (LTPC), with Chloe Cook (Bodyworks XTC) taking the top spot for the women’s wave, followed by Iona Miller (Fusion Triathlon Club) and Sian Temple (South West Academy).

The 15-16 year old Super Series athletes were no less determined, with Connor Bentley (Wrekin College Triathlon Club) beating Marcus Dey (North West Regional Triathlon Academy) and Oliver Makinson (Rochdale Tri) over the line. In the women’s wave Elsbeth Grant (EMRA) emerged victorious, ahead of Almaz Nerurkar (Bodyworks XTC) and Freya Thomson (Optima Racing Team).

Completing a morning of competitive racing, the High-Performance Drafting waves for 13-14 year olds and 11-12 year olds, showcased some fantastic up-and-coming triathletes with winners including Daniel Roberts (Team Cherwell), Lily-Jane Evans-Haggerty (Fusion Triathlon Club), Jake Latham (Walden JNR) and Grace Nolan (EVT).

At 12:40 the atmosphere turned to one of fun, as the 9-10-year-old and 8-year-old waves were encouraged through their triathlon. Taking on a shortened course of 100m swim, 1.5/3km bike and 600m/1km run, it was fantastic to see so many first timers coming away with medals and beaming smiles.

British Bike Hire and Zone3 were on hand in the event village throughout the day for last-minute bike tune-ups and purchases, as well as bike and wetsuit hire – perfect for those dipping their toes into the sport for the first time.

In the 11-12 years waves we saw no less enthusiasm from each participant to do their very best, with speedy times from winners Ethan Darcy and Amelia Bennett.

At 3pm with just four waves left, our final groups of 13-14 year olds, and 15-18 year olds rounded off a successful day of racing. Many of the children that had already finished stayed to cheer on those competitors still out on the course, illustrating the friendly and supportive atmosphere of SuperTri.

Harry Holdaway (Tri Activ Lanzarote), Ethan Bennett and Jamie Prince were the first three finishers cheered over the line in the 13-14 year old boys wave, followed by Beth Darwent (Abingdon AC), Jessica Farrant (Sussex Tristars) and Maddy Giller from the girls.

Barney Clacy (Chapel Tri) took the title in the 15-18 age category for the boys, while Maddy Pullen stormed to success in the girls wave.

A huge thank you to everybody who joined us at the event, and we hope to see you again soon. Full results from the SuperTri Children’s, Youth and Junior Open Water Triathlon can be found here.
