15 years of the Eton SuperSprints
11th May 2016
Eton SuperSprint events are 15 years old!
Over the weekend of the 21st/22nd May, the Nuffield Health Eton SuperSprint events (racing takes place on both Saturday and Sunday), will reach their 15th birthday.
While there have been many hundreds of multisport events held at Dorney Lake, Eton (or ‘Eton Dorney’ as it became known under the London 2012 umbrella, as host to the Olympic Games rowing events), the Eton SuperSprint events have been one constant throughout that time – even though the venue looks a lot different and has been extensively developed over those 15 years.
In the early years, the event was held on several days throughout the season, while the last ten years have seen it become one of the marquee events of the start of the open water racing season in the UK, with back-to-back racing over one weekend each May.
Over that time, many thousands of athletes have raced, with a winners list which includes Elite World Champions in Ironman, Ironman 70.3, ITU Standard, ITU Long Distance, XTERRA, Aquathlon, Biathle… along with several Olympians, too! You can add to that’s lots of athletes who have gone on to win Ironman events, Ironman 70.3 races, Age-Group World Championships and much more. There’s a ‘who’s who’ of British triathlon below, just in the history of one event.
Our friends over at Tri247 have compiled some incredible stats and quotes from some of the triathlon greats who have raced this event, as well as a complete history of results going back to the very first event in 2001. Click here to read more.
