Now in its second year, the Shock Absorber WomenOnly Run features both five and ten kilometre distances on closed roads in the idyllic autumnal setting of London’s Richmond Park.
The park, at almost 2,500 acres, is the largest of the Royal Parks and is home to some of the capital city’s most varied and colourful wildlife including 650 free roaming deer. The one-lap course winds its way through the park’s pastoral landscape of ponds, gardens and grasslands set among ancient woodland, keeping to completely traffic-free, tarmac roads at all times.
This is the perfect event for any ladies looking to move away from the larger mass-participation events out there and towards something quieter and more intimate, all while retaining all those little creature comforts a well-organised event should always include. With the two distances, the Shock Absorber Women Only Run is the perfect event for all the female members of the family to try, while the finish area will feature a varied mix of distractions to keep the men happy - when they are not busy cheering of course!
Something for Everyone
With 10k, 5k and ‘Run with your Buggy’ options, there’s no excuse not to get involved! What’s more, the course lends itself perfectly for friends and family to support and cheer you on and once again Breast Cancer Care are on board as official charity so you can use the challenge to raise money for a great cause.
Whether you are an experience athlete or a first-time jogger, the Shock Absorber WomenOnly Run offers a great opportunity to run on closed roads through one of London’s most beautiful autumnal scenes.
This year we will be adding a wheelchair start to the event so any wheelchair athletes looking to take advantage of a perfectly suited course on smooth closed roads will have a dedicated start time just before the runners.
Warm up and Cool down
Before each event there will be a 15 minute warm up to get you ready for your run and after the event there will be the opportunity to take part in a 15 minute yoga cool-down session to make sure you’re stretched out and properly warmed-down after your exertions.
What’s new for 2012?
Now in its second year, we’ll be making some little improvements on the 2011 event so it’s even better. There will be a little tweak to the course to ensure the distances are completely accurate and we’ll be adding three Motivational Music Stations at key points in the course to put a spring in your step when the going gets tough.
This year, every finisher will receive a quality, event-specific medal to wear with pride. Special baby-blue WomenOnly technical t-shirts are also available to buy with your entry and will be sent out to runners a week before the event ready to wear on the day.
Richmond Park is a National Nature Reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interst and a European Special Area of Conservation. Friends of the Royal Parks, the police and The Royal Parks have put together a leaflet 'Tread Lightly in Richmond Park' to alert visitors, particularly those who are unfamiliar to the Park, as to how they can avoid harming the Park and its widlife. This leaflet can be read by clicking on the logo opposite.
As title sponsor of the event, the UK’s leading sports brand Shock Absorber, would like to remind you how important it is to wear a good sports bra. The average breast bounces significantly during running, meaning female runners are at risk from breast damage. Wearing a Shock Absorber sports bra will provide up to 78% less breast bounce, giving you the support and sports performance you need, letting you focus on the finish line. For more information on their range of sports bras and stockists go to: www.shockabsorber.co.uk and join up to their Facebook Page for training tips.
Official charity Breast Cancer Care would love you to join their team. With your help they are hoping to raise vital funds to support some of the 46,000 people who are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Being part of Team Breast Cancer will mean you will receive support and guidance right up till race day, a fitted ladies t-shirt to take part in, cheers around the course and some post-race goodies.
