Marlow Swim Event Information

Open Water River Swim: 750m
Open Water River Swim: 1500m
Open Water River Swim: 3km

For the penultimate event the Open Water Swim Series descends on Marlow, and the River Thames, for one of the most picturesque events on the UK’s open water swimming calendar.

Open water swimming in the Thames is an amazing challenge whether you are an elite or a beginner and taking to the water from the grassy banks at Marlow is an unforgettable experience. You can choose from 750 metres, 1500 metres or the full 3 kilometres, all of which start and finish along the bank just upstream from the bridge in the centre of town. If the start area looks familiar, that might be because you saw it on the television during the epic Thames Swim by comedian David Walliams. He got out of the water at exactly the same spot, surrounded by hundreds of cheering supporters of course!

As with every event in the series, the Marlow Swim provides unparalleled levels of water safety with the experienced and knowledgeable Human Race Water Safety Crew looking after you at every stroke.

Post swim hygiene stations will be in place where participants can soak their wetsuit in sterilizing Milton Dip as well as gel pump dispensers as an added health measure.

·         Gloves and booties can be used
·         The Swims will not be cancelled if the temperature falls below 11 degrees
·         Wetsuits are optional

All swimmers will receive an event swim cap and an exclusive Swim Series medal – so you’ll be able to collect the full set through the series! Event-specific T-Shirts are also available for purchase via the event entry page and there will be lots of goodies on the day from our event partners.

The Marlow Swim is great for spectators, with virtually the whole course visible from the start/finish area and some great views from the bridge too. This is definitely an event where bringing a camera is a must for participants and spectators alike.

Changing areas, baggage store and toilets will all be available within the event village, as will our retail partners in case you forget your goggles, or worse, your swim suit!

PROVISIONAL START TIMES: 8:00am 750m, 8:10am 1500m Male, 8:20am 1500m Female, 8:35am 3km Male, 8:50am 3km Female

Swimming in the Thames - what are the risks?

We take the health of our swimmers extremely seriously, and always carry out all the necessary pre-event precautions, including checking the pH levels, testing for E-coli and ensuring the water complies with EU Bathing Standards. However, there are still some risks associated with swimming in the Thames, and we advise you not to swim if you have been unwell in the days leading up to the race. We provide post-swim cleansing stations with Milton dip to wash your wetsuits and hand-washing facilities before you collect your bags, medal or any food. Please make sure you make thorough use of this to avoid any post-race illness. Top tips include:

- Cover any minor cuts or abrasions before your swim
- Rinse your mouth out before drinking anything post-race
- Use an antibacterial hand wash before you eat anything after the race

For more tips on how to avoid getting ill, check out this information sheet from Public Health England.
