Wiggle Dragon Ride Event Information

Wiggle Dragon Ride

Now in its 12th year, the Wiggle Dragon Ride remains the most prestigious sportive in the UK and a “bucket list” event for any cyclist. All routes start from the picturesque Margam Park in South Wales, before taking on climbs through the Brecon Beacons most similar to the Alpine terrain of the Tour de France. The event typically sells out its places for the traditional Gran Fondo and Medio Fondo routes within 24 hours, with only Charity Places remaining and the new epic Dragon Devil distance launched for the 2014 event sold out in just two hours. The day also features a shorter Corto and Cycletta WomenOnly route.

Dragon slayers now have something even more epic to look forward to as the inaugural Dragon Tour is launching for next year’s event. The new three day Tour event will see 500 cyclists take on a sportive each day, culminating with the Dragon Ride itself on day three. Each evening Tour riders can enjoy a dinner, some post ride recovery and they will be joined by a special guest speaker on the final evening. A variety of packages are available including accommodation and merchandise options.

More about the event

The UK’s most prestigious Sportive returns for its 12th year in 2015. The South Wales event will once again start from the picturesque Margam Park, Port Talbot, having moved there successfully in 2012. 2014 saw the introduction of a mammoth Dragon Devil distance as well as the return of the traditional Corto.

Offering four challenging distances: the Gran Fondo will take in approximately 2,905m of climbing, passing through the beautiful Brecon Beacons and the Medio Fondo approximately 2,060m. The Corto returns after a brief hiatus in 2013, and the returning distance will have a re-modelled and slightly longer route of approximately 42km.

The Dragon Devil will certainly not be for the faint hearted. There will be a very limited numbers of places available for this option, so those who are keen will need to get in quickly. Those lucky enough to get a place will be well rewarded with an incredibly stunning cycling route which will take in the 'Rhigos''Black Mountain' and the 'Devil’s Elbow' – the Dragon ride’s signature climbs – with the new addition of the 'Devil's Staircase', a climb with a 15% gradient and elevation of 480m.

The WomenOnly Macmillan Cycletta will follow the same route as the Corto riders. Macmillan Cycletta is the UK’s leading series of women only bike rides, supported by Olympic Gold Medallist Victoria Pendleton.

To find out more about the development of the Wiggle Dragon Ride you can read an interview with the founder of the event Lou Lusardi here.

The Wiggle Dragon Ride will be based at Margam Park, Margam, Port Talbot, SA13 2TJ South Wales.

Margam Park is well used to holding major events such as the Wales Rally GB and British Championship Mountain Bike races. The park is located right alongside the M4 motorway and is close to the main line railway stations at Port Talbot and Pyle. Port Talbot station is the nearest to the venue, approximately a 25 minute walk away.

Event car parking will be situated within the deer park only a few hundred metres from the start/finish area, the spacious eastern area of the park will accommodate a more expansive start facility in order to reduce waiting times for riders to get underway.

There are also several attractions on site for family members attending the ride such as the "Go Ape" zip wire, adventure playground, fantasy land and mountain bike hire.
