  • My first sports event was the 2011 Cycletta...since then I’ve gone on to do sportives, duathlons, aquathlons, triathlons, swims & runs so it really did change things for me.

  • The women only atmosphere is really welcoming and is a great idea to get people to try events – it certainly helped build my confidence to go on and do mixed events.

ABOUT THE EVENT

Macmillan Cycletta is the UK’s leading series of women-only bike rides and is supported by Olympic Gold Medallist Victoria Pendleton. This event is designed to appeal to women of all ages and abilities. For the third year a Macmillan Cycletta ride will take place as part of the UK’s most prestigious sportive, the Wiggle Dragon Ride. The event starts from the picturesque Margam Park, Port Talbot.

This Macmillan Cycletta at the Wiggle Dragon Ride will be slightly hillier than the usual Macmillan Cycletta rides meaning it will be more of a challenge if you have done previous Macmillan Cycletta events. The event will follow the same 42km route as the Corto riders.

A slightly tougher test than the other events in the UK wide series, it provides a perfect platform for those wishing to work towards a larger more challenging sportive, with all the usual camaraderie that Macmillan Cycletta rides never fail to provide.

As with any Macmillan Cycletta event, there is no obligation to fundraise if you want to take part. We would love you to raise as much money as possible to help the great work Macmillan do for those who are suffering with cancer. No portion of the entry fee goes directly to Macmillan, any money received by Macmillan comes from fundraising undertaken by participants.

Travel/Accommodation

The Dragon Ride will be based at Margam Park, Margam, Port Talbot, SA13 2TJ South Wales.

Please arrive at the venue before 9:30am to get free parking.

Margam Park is well used to holding major events such as the Wales Rally GB and British Championship Mountain Bike races. The park is located right alongside the M4 motorway and is close to the main line railway stations at Port Talbot and Pyle.

From riders feedback two main areas that will be improved are car parking and the start procedure. Car parking will be situated within the deer park only a few hundred metres from the start/finish area, the spacious eastern area of the park will accommodate a more expansive start facility in order to reduce waiting times for riders to get underway.

There are also several attractions on site for family members attending the ride such as the "Go Ape" zip wire, adventure playground, fantasy land and mountain bike hire.

Nutrition and Hydration

SpaToneWomenOnly240x160Feeling tired?

Did you know 9 out of 10 women do not get enough iron from their diet?

Low iron stores can mean the transport of oxygen around your body decreases which can lead to symptoms such as fatigue.

Don’t let your training take a nose-dive, click here to learn how to keep up with your training in an easy, gentle and effective way with Spatone!

VitaCoco240 Keep hydrated

Staying hydrated is crucial for achieving peak performance. Vita Coco coconut water promotes rehydration as well as refuelling as it provides carbohydrate as well as fluid.

Before exercise, your main priority is ensuring you are hydrated to have the best chance of putting in your best performance. During exercise, there are no hard and fast rules about how much to drink but, 400-800ml per hour will prevent dehydration and overhydration. After exercise, the sooner you start to replace the fluid the sooner you will recover. So make drinking your priority immediately after exercise.

Click here for more information on how to stay hydrated.

powerbar240Fuel yourself

In order to keep up the pace and achieve a strong finish, the body must be supplied with the right amount of fluid and nutrients during competition. A balanced and healthy diet with a targeted sports nutrition strategy will let you get the most out of your training and improve your performance.

The three most important key principles of a sports nutrition strategy are hydration, energy and recovery.
